GREENSBORO, N.C. — Northside now has two state champions in track and field, both on the same day.
Senior Andrew Harding and sophomore Colten Smith took home top honors during the Class 1A track and field state finals on Friday at Marcus T. Johnson Track at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.
Smith took home first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.02 seconds. He held off Langtree Charter Academy’s Braden McGee, who finished at 48.34 seconds, and Dylan Dahlberg of Mountain Heritage, who came in at 49.14 seconds.
Harding won the 3,200-meter run to capture his second state title this season. He won the Class 1A cross country title last fall. On Friday, he ran a 9:35.93 time to blister the field for the gold medal. Second-place runner Ogana Swimmer of Cherokee finished in 9:52.40.
In the 1,600-meter run, Harding fell just short at the finish of a double state title, capturing second. He finished that race in 4:13.61 while Corvian Community School’s Carson Williams finished at 4:12.97. Harding had the lead at every 400-meter mark before Williams caught him in the final stretch.
In the team scores, Northside finished seventh with 31 points while Southside was tied for 35th with five points. Harding got 18 points with his first and second-place finishes, while Smith got 10 points with his state title.
On the girls’ side, Southside and Northside finished in a tie with five other teams with four points each. Southside’s I’Kiriyah Minor finished her high school career by finishing fifth in the triple jump. Northside’s Chloe Black was sixth in the discus while OJ Cahoon was eighth in the high jump.
