Aurora area residents gathered at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, June 6 at S.W. Snowden Elementary School to give students a final sendoff. Students who attended Snowden this year are the last students to ever walk its hallways.

On Tuesday, June 3, the Beaufort County Board of Education voted 6-3 to permanently close Snowden due to decreasing student population and lack of essential funding.

Students, depending on their grade level, will either attend Chocowinity Primary School or Chocowinity Middle School. Students also have the option to attend another school within Beaufort County (if space is available), a private or charter school or attend a school in Pamlico County. Students who move to Chocowinity Primary or Middle will not have to register, according to Beaufort County Schools.
