Several different agencies carried the torch and showed their support at the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Tuesday.
The run was held after a previous event was rained out. Joining the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office were deputies, troopers and officers from the Washington Police Department, NC State Highway Patrol, NC Marine Fisheries and the NC Department of Corrections.
The run began and ended at Mac “Bear” Hodges Festival Park in downtown Washington. It began at 10 a.m. and circled different parts of the downtown area. Different runners took part in carrying the torch along the path.
Beaufort County Sheriff Scott Hammonds was part of a ceremony that was held to recognize the event and the efforts from the run. Volunteers and athletes from the Beaufort/Hyde Special Olympics also participated.
According to the sheriff’s office Facebook page, the NC Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised over $920,000 in fundraising. The goal is $2.25 million.
You can go to the sheriff’s office Facebook page to make a contribution and to purchase a T-shirt to support the cause. They are $20 each, with all proceeds going to Special Olympics of North Carolina.
