Raleigh, NC — Today, the North Carolina House of Representatives approved Senate Bill 50 (Freedom to Carry NC), reinforcing Second Amendment rights in the state.
SB 50 guarantees law-abiding citizens aged 18 and older the right to constitutional carry without first obtaining a state-issued permit, while keeping in place the current permit system for those wanting reciprocity with other states or personal preference.
The legislation maintains strong safeguards to keep firearms out of the hands of violent criminals, domestic abusers, and others prohibited under existing law. It also increases penalties for serious firearm offenses, including illegal possession by felons, assaults on first responders, and unlawful discharges by prohibited individuals.
Rep. Keith Kidwell said, “This is a great day for law-abiding gun owners across North Carolina. I’m proud the House stood up today to affirm the fundamental right to keep and bear arms. Senate Bill 50 restores freedom and trust to responsible citizens while ensuring that criminals face stronger penalties for breaking the law.”
