NOTE: Post 15 went to Manteo High School and won two games there against Outer Banks on Saturday, 10-1 and 4-1, to improve to 5-0 in Area 1. The team had 20 hits in the two games to put their batting average at .330, according to coach Bobby Boyd. They also committed no errors.

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — The news has been nothing but good lately for Beaufort County Post 15.

The Junior American Legion baseball team learned it will be the host team for the Area 1 postseason once regular-season play finishes. That means every team will play its games in the postseason at Chocowinity Middle School.

It’s another step in the right direction as Post 15 looks to win both the regular season and Area 1 titles, something that has eluded the program in years past. That stretch continued with Tuesday’s 10-0 five-inning win over Ahoskie.

It was the team’s third win over Ahoskie this season and included a no-hitter from pitcher Luke Alligood, a rising junior at Pungo Christian Academy.

“We’ve come a long way,” said third baseman Carter Williams, who drove in two runs in the fourth inning and was at the plate when the last run scored. “We focused a lot on our fielding. We knew that the hitting would come. We knew that we’d scratch off a few runs.

“I’m excited that we get to host (the Area 1 playoffs). It’s gonna be great. We’re gonna have a serious home-field advantage. I mean, this is where we play every single day. We know this place. We know the ins and outs.”

The Area 1 announcement and Tuesday’s game were just the beginning of the good news the team got. After Saturday’s doubleheader at Manteo High School on Saturday and a trip to Wilson on Monday, Post 15 will have six of its last eight regular season games at home. That includes the June 20 First Responders’ Day game, slated for 7 p.m.

“The thing about it is, hosting Area 1, they call it Area 1 playoff because it’s really all eight teams are gonna come here,” Beaufort County coach Bobby Boyd said. And this is huge. Next year, we’ll be able to hopefully go to Washington (High School). But to bring it here (Chocowinity Middle School), and these guys now kinda realize, ‘Hey, we get to host it’.”

Alligood only needed 48 pitches to complete the no-hitter. He struck out the first two batters he faced and only gave up a walk. Another runner was picked off first base in the second inning.

Post 15 got five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth on a big hit by Carter Williams. He also ended it in the fifth. Before that, a bases-loaded walk scored Luis Hernandez to make it 9-0. Then, with Williams batting, Corbin Lee scored on a suicide squeeze to make it 10-0 and end the game.

“I mean, I just looked down at Coach Bobby,” Williams said. “He told me to do that suicide squeeze. I was like, all right, we’re gonna do this. And one pitch, that was it. Got laid it down straight back to the pitcher.

I knew that we had it about halfway down first base. I just kept on running, but yes, sir.”

Boyd was proud of Alligood’s efforts but also proud of his No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 hitters (Williams, Landon Griffin and Keegan Mitchell), who provided a lot of the scoring bulk with big hits, especially in the fifth inning.

It was just one of many things that worked well for Post 15 on Tuesday. Boyd is hopeful that offense will continue to improve to match the defense and solid pitching the team has had.

“There’s two things we have told them from day one,” Boyd said. “If you pitch for this team, we get solid pitching, and we get solid defense, we’re gonna be in every ball game.

“Now, I’ve done legion now for this many years, and we’ve never had back-to-back shutouts pitching (got a 2-0 win over Perquimans on Monday). So our pitching is there. We’re getting timely hitting, kinda gelling.”
