CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — Luke Alligood said after Tuesday’s Post 15 Junior American Legion baseball game against Ahoskie that he wasn’t completely prepared for what came next.
He said was ready to pitch and did all the things necessary before the start of the game to get himself set to face Ahoskie Post 102. What followed was the first-ever no-hitter that he said he’s ever thrown. In fact, he said he may have come close to throwing one before.
What also came next was the postgame interview, something he said he hasn’t had much experience with doing. However, he had a lot to say about the day, pitching and the no-hitter. So we talked with him about all of that.
1. So you’ve never thrown a no-hitter before?
“No, sir. I think I’ve gotten close one time.”
2. I didn’t see your teammates avoiding you or anything like that while you were pitching. You see teams don’t wanna mess up their mojo. You seemed to have things working quickly. You threw 46 pitches and struck out the first two batters.
“Well, I don’t really know what was working for me. I just go out there and pitch, because I like pitching. I like being out here. I like being out here with the guys, playing baseball. It’s fun, good time, and when you’re having a game like this, I guess you just keep going with the flow and have a great game.”
3. You’ve already played Ahoskie twice. You even opened the season with a win over them. So I guess you had the mindset of that. Did things change as far as your approach in any way?
“Well, I was thinking, I know I’m pitching today, I gotta rest all day, gotta stay loose, and I just tried to lock in, not think about anything else, and just go throw good so we could get out there and win this game.”
4. (Head coach) Bobby (Boyd) said he was trying to get you some runs at one point in the game. You guys finally broke through with five runs in the third inning. How much did that help? Did it take some pressure off you?
“Yes, sir, it definitely helped, because, I mean, having runs to protect you out there and not having to worry about, if you give up a run or if you hit or anything, get people on base, that doesn’t get in your mind when you got some runs behind you.”
5. So what does it mean to have a game like this and a no-hitter?
“It’s definitely nice having a good game like this. It keeps you confident, it keeps your mind up, and just lets you have good games and have a good hot streak the rest of the year.”
