Chocowinity Middle School announced on social media that one of its recently graduated students was killed in an accident in Mexico.

Lindsy Angeles Vargas was killed while with her family, according to a post on the school’s Facebook page, which was made on Friday morning. The post said she had recently graduated from Chocowinity Middle School and had been accepted to Beaufort County Early College.

The Facebook post read in part, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of the sudden loss of one of our own, Lindsy Angeles Vargas, from a tragic accident while in Mexico with her family. Lindsy was a shining light in our school community—a model student, a dedicated athlete, and a kind, compassionate friend to everyone she met.

“Her positive spirit and bright smile touched so many lives. Lindsy was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can express. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, teammates, and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss.”

The school also noted that support to students and staff will be offered in the school’s gym on Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
