CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — Bobby Boyd continues to be both amazed and proud at what his baseball team has done so far this season.
Beaufort County Post 15’s Junior American Legion team wrapped up regular-season play on Monday with a 5-4 loss to the top-seed Roanoke. That put Beaufort County at 11-6 overall, 10-4 in Area 1 play heading into next week’s postseason.
Post 15 will host starting Monday at Chocowinity Middle School. The seven-team, double-elimination format promises to be just as exciting, if not more, in the postseason with the likes of Roanoke, Wilson and Lawrence joining Beaufort County as the teams to beat.
Boyd does know his team is the No. 3 seed and will face Ahoskie on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Wilson will take on Raleigh at 7 p.m. in the nightcap. A scheduled game between Edenton and Lawrence will not be played. That was determined after the bracket was set.
Boyd said Beaufort County was the only team to play all 14 of its games, a testament to the resilency of the squad and how they have come together with so many new faces.
“All year, one of the things that we were concerned, as any coach would be when you replace 14 ballplayers, what are you going to get?” Boyd said. “And what we got was by far the overall best team chemistry. No quit in them. You saw that the other night in that 19-18 (loss against Lawrence).
Boyd said at the start of the season that he thought his team’s pitching and defense were solid and that the offense would come along. After Monday, Boyd said the team is hitting .320. Overall, just six runs was the difference in the squad going unbeaten in league play.
“To do that and to hit, like I said, .320 and be 10-4 in the conference and you’re battling, you’re either going to be 2-3 seed,” Boyd said. “I told them the other night when we left Riverside (High School after playing Roanoke), you guys have already accomplished as much as probably anybody could have ever hoped or imagined just in the regular season.
“So as a coach, replacing 14 guys, putting that team together in a 2-3 week time frame, where other Legion teams are basically their school team. To gel that, to find who fits where and to make this kind of run already, it’s amazing what those young men have done.”
And it doesn’t stop there. Roanoke has a guaranteed spot in the state tournament in Cherryville. Beaufort County would like to win the tournament and join them there after next week’s play.
“It’s just simply amazing,” Boyd said. “And anybody who sees it has got to say they have accomplished a lot. But no matter what your age is, you still have to play the game.
“But as a coach, not knowing what we were going to get, very satisfied with what they’ve done already.”
