The Washington Garden Club met at the Grace Martin Harwell Center; President Jane Fields opened the meeting at 10 a.m. Sylvia Evans led the members in the recitation of the Collect. The President thanked members for providing refreshments for the meeting. She welcomed guests Jane Weaver and Elaine Sheridan.
Maja Weaver introduced Christie Hardiston Roberson, the Program and Recreation Manager for Washington. During her program Christie presented a slide show of the City of Washington Recreation Department. The Mission Statement was read, and a listing of city responsibilities were noted. Christie informed members of upcoming projects for the department: new showers and boater bathrooms; power and water for the docks; boats, the Jeanie B. and Belle of Washington are under their jurisdiction; Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center; Festival Park, etc…The Building and Grounds has been moved over to Public Works. After the program, Mary Paulson presented Sandra Snapp a crown for her participation in the television program Treasure Detectives. The program aired on April 9th. The portrait of Queen Elizabeth I has been authenticated and is worth a considerable sum. This is great news for the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo!
A Treasurer’s report was presented.
The Executive Committee had a meeting a week before our monthly meeting and discussed next year’s programs. Possibilities are: topiaries; a tour of a garden; the Christmas luncheon; pruning.
President Fields encouraged members to sign up for next year’s committees.
Mary Paulson reviewed The Carolina Gardeners’ Guide, a book in our garden club library. Mary would like to have a book reviewed at each meeting.
Tryon Palace Plant sale was the weekend of the 12th.
Eleanor Broderick reminded the members that our garden club Herb Sale is coming up. Set up for the event at the Estuarium will be May 2nd at 9:00 a.m. The sale will be on Saturday, May 4th.
The June luncheon will be held at the Estuarium; it is a pot lunch affair and will be on June 14th, Flag Day.
Nancy Nash critiqued the Bench Show. Next month our program will be about Thomas Jefferson, the gardener. Members should prepare flower arrangements reflecting that topic. (e.g. Colonialism; Williamsburg)
The Master Gardener’s Plant Sale will be held April 9 – 12 at the Extension.
