Belhaven evades elimination with win

WASHINGTON — Belhaven avoided elimination Tuesday evening after defeating West Martin Country, 14-7, in the first round of the Little Tarheel District 7 Tournament losers’ bracket.

Belhaven, a day removed from a disappointing loss to Tar River, mustered enough offensive firepower to outhit their opponent, tacking on four quick runs in the first on sloppy defense, a walk and one of two doubles on the day from the three hitter Tyler Harris.

Carrying the momentum into the next frame, Belhaven scored seven more runs on hits by Harris and Lee Beacham, along with a collection of walks and defensive blunders.

After a two-run first inning, West Martin’s Nolan Lawson led off the second with a home run that bounced into the parking lot. Ben Corey followed suit in the fourth with a two-run homer of his own.

In the end, the long ball wouldn’t be enough, as Washington added to its lead in the late innings.

Washington amasses huge late-inning comeback to advance

WASHINGTON — For head coach Chip Edwards team, runs always seem to come in bunches. And Tuesday was no different, as a nine-run fifth inning erased a four-run deficit and propelled the Washington 9U All-Stars to a 17-12 victory over Dare County.

Dare jumped on Washington starter Reid Apple early, combining for three runs on hits by Ivey Midgett and AJ Spencer, a walk and a costly outfield error.

Despite a slow start, Edwards’ squad jumped on Spencer, the Dare starter, early. Two errors, two walks and hits by Eli Huynh, Dawson Mitchell, Hayden Moore and Isaac Campbell resulted in a seven-run first inning.

However, Washington would score just one run over the next four frames, as Dare slowly chipped away, scoring five in the second inning and four in the third inning. Dare led 12-8 heading into the final inning,

Then, in what is likely the comeback of the tournament thus far, the first nine batters reached for Washington. All nine came around to score. Mitchell, Apple, Evan O’Neal, Moore and Keifer Boyd all recorded hits in the inning.

Huynh would finish the game off by retiring the side.

With the win, Washingotn advances to the third round of the losers bracket and will play at today at 6 p.m. on Field 3.
