The Beaufort County Arts Council’s seventh annual Juried Photography Exhibit will open Thursday with a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the BCAC Gallery at the Turnage Theatre. The exhibit will run through Aug. 14.

Internationally renowned juror Jerome De Perlinghi chose 41 works from 121 entries submitted by 36 different photographers.

“It’s one of our strongest shows ever,” said BCAC Executive Director Joey Toler.  “Though our entries were down slightly from last year, Jerome did a great job in putting together a quality exhibition,” said Toler.

Awards will be revealed at the opening reception.

Awards include first, second, and third place plus honorable mentions in five categories:  documentary/people, landscapes/places, nature/wildlife, mixed media/alternative process, and a youth division for photographers under age 18.  Special awards include the Stewart Jewelry Store Best In Show Award, the Washington Daily News award for work best depicting photojournalism, and the Frank Sommerkamp History Award.  The Jesse Lee and Corinne Mayo Smith Memorial Award for outstanding works in the youth category is sponsored by Kevin Scott Cutler.  Two awards, sponsored by ASAP Photo & Camera, Inc. include Best Color (digitally enhanced) and Best Color (non-enhanced).

The exhibit will be open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. through Aug. 14 and is free and open to the public. The BCAC Gallery is located in the historic Turnage Theatre at 150 W. Main St. in downtown Washington.
