The Brown Library may be known for its collection of books, but right now, it’s the collection of art that drawing attention.

Until the end of September, work by artist Shawn Watters is on exhibit at the library. Acrylics, watercolors, pencil drawings, magic markers — even a portrait of musical legend Bob Dylan drawn with a Sharpie — Watters works in a broad array of media, and depicts an even broader of array of subjects.

“I like the diversity of the pieces,” said program coordinator Terry Rollins. “It’s across the board — fantasy, self-portraits, nature. It’s a wonderful mix.”

Rollins coordinates the exhibits for the library and hunts down artists he’d like to see on display. After seeing some of Watters’ work at the downtown Washington restaurant Grub Brothers, Rollins tracked Watters down to ask him if he’d like to have an exhibit. Turned out, Watters work had the seen the library before.

“Many years ago he’d done a show here — before I came the library,” Rollins said.

Watters’ paintings and drawings are on display in the fiction section, lining the shelves on the outer walls, accompanied by brief descriptions of Watters’ work, his personal history with art and tributes to those who’ve supported him along the way: his wife, Kellie, his parents and several friends are mentioned. According to those statements, Watters comes from a very artistic family and by the time he was six years old and at school, he recognized that his drawings in the classroom were different from those of other students. Watters has never officially studied art, taken a lesson or read an instructional book, according to one mini-biography. Regardless of the lack training, Watters’ work is in demand locally  — as a portrait painter, as a painter of murals.

Rollins encouraged all library visitors to take a stroll around the library to see Watters’ work. Brown Library is located at 122 Van Norden Street, Washington; hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
