UNDER THE STARS: Bath hosts first outdoor movie event

BATH — Pirates and fairies will parade down the red carpet. Stories will be told to an excited crowd of little ones. Tiny hands will dig for fossils as giant paper airplanes cruise overhead. Jump ropes skipped and bubbles blown to float on the breeze. All this before the main event: a movie, and more, under the stars.

Saturday night, the Bath Community Library, with assistance from the Wee Pirates Play Outside initiative will host its first “out of the box” event, bringing the community outside, and together, in Bath. Made possible by a grant from Redbox, the movie rental company, the first movie to be played is in keeping with Bath’s history but because of provisions determining its use, the movie can’t be named. But it’s pirate movie, made by Disney.

The movie will be shown on an inflatable screen, one of the items that came with winning an “Out of the Box” grant in June, said Susan Benning, BHM Regional Library’s director. The rest included projection equipment and speakers, canopy tents, huge umbrellas and café tables and chairs that will turn a simple movie under the stars into a town celebration.

“Money for that kind of equipment would never be found in our budget,” Benning said.

It was Benning’s and Wee Pirates Play Outside organizer Debra Torrence’s last-minute application to Redbox that won the grant that brought in what the library couldn’t have afforded otherwise. The two had 48 hours to get their information together and submitted.

“We did it and the most amazing thing was that we found out a week later that we got it,” Benning said.

That was in June. Now, they’re ready for the first event, to be held on the town lot next to the Bath Community Library and the Town Hall Library on Harding Street. At 4 p.m., Blounts Creek musician Bob Daw will entertain the crowd with live music, and the food tent will be serving pizza and drinks courtesy of Bath restaurant Blackbeard’s Slice and Ices. Storytelling runs from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m., while a jump rope and giant paper airplane contests will be held from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. Those who come dressed in pirate or fairy regalia will be able to walk the red carpet at 5:30 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to bring a blanket or folding chairs to set up on the lawn. The movie begins at dusk — popcorn and snowcones will be sold by the Bath Lions Club.

“To do something like this takes a lot of volunteers — it’s really a commitment,” Benning said. “The community really wants the outdoor spaces to be used.”

This is the first event of its kind in Bath, Benning said, but it won’t be the last. There are already plans in the works for another in October.
