SPRINT TO THE FINISH: Alex Spain chases down a forward in Saturday’s game against Washington Masons.

The Optimist Club of Washington held its first fall slate of soccer games this weekend and on the coolest, dew-sprinkled Saturday morning to date, the Washington Masons out of the Division II age group locked up its second win of the season against First Methodist Church, 7-1.

The beginning stages of the ballgame were a possession battle between the Mason forwards and First Methodist midfielders, but it was striker Jay Lohman who capitalized early. After a missed chanced of goal in the opening minute, Lohman dribbled through the back line, juking out defenders as he went. His first shot deflected off the goalie and back to him. His second did not miss, as Lohman opened the game up with a perfectly placed shot in the bottom corner.

The goal would be the first of many for the Washington Masons. Minutes later, Lohman laid a cross to the right foot of his counterpart Victor Gonzalez, who slid by two defenders and blasted a shot off the crossbar that redirected across the line.

After 10 minutes of scoreless soccer, First Methodist narrowed the deficit, as Emma Holloman corralled a throw-in from Alex Spain and slipped a bad angle shot between the post and the goalkeeper to bring the score to 2-1.

Washington Masons dominated the possession game for the remainder of the half, shutting down the opposing offense and widening the lead.

Lohman was able to notch his second goal, while Morgan Eisenzimmer received a through ball and picked up a goal of her own. Minutes before the end of the half, Gonzalez made it 5-1 after rocketing a shot that deflected off the goalie’s hands and into the back of the net.

Washington Masons outshot the opposition 11-4 in the first half, although First Methodist would make a valiant comeback in the second half.

Pushing more midfielders up, First Methodist’s Evan Fullwood had four chances on net early, while Spain continued to create scoring opportunities from the sweeper position. However, neither Fullwood nor Spain was able to capitalize down the stretch.

In the final minutes of the game, Lohman worked his way through he defense and tapped a shot past the goalie. Gonzalez followed by placing a corner kick right in front of the net, where Lilly Davis came through with an easy goal.

Lohman finished with a game-high three goals, adding to his already impressive season total.

Washington Masons will play Little’s Heat and Air Sunday on Field 6 at 1 p.m., while First Methodist takes on H&R Block at 3:30 p.m.
