GREENVILLE — In a Community Youth Football League game that was decided in the final seconds by just a few inches, the Washington Redskins defeated Greenville Titan Black, 6-0.

This week’s matchup featured two strong teams from the 10U division with defenses worthy of recognition. While basing most of their offense on the run, the Redskins are known throughout the league as a team that’s not afraid to throw the ball. The Titans stuck to their signature game plan by presenting a variety of different running options, utilizing five different backs on the day.

But Saturday’s game wasn’t about the backs. Rather, it was about the defenses, both of which held the competition to under 100-total yards.

Under center, Washington’s Wallace Burrus managed the game early. In the first quarter, the Redskins quarterback notched a booming 12-yard run up field, but a fumble on the ensuing play by the fullback erased the yardage.

Greenville’s first play from scrimmage was a 28-yard run up the sideline by Levion Smith. However, the Titans did not have much success moving the ball in the first quarter following the big gain.

The best offensive possession for either team came in the second quarter, as Burrus, tailback Elijah Covington and running back Jonathan Carter split carries and quickly moved the ball past midfield. Then, Burrus threw the defense off by dropping back and hurling a deep ball downfield, one that fell right into the hands of Covington, who took it 38-yards for a touchdown. The connection would be a game-saving play for the Redskins.

From the end of the second quarter through the first five minutes of the third, two lengthy drives by Washington drained time off the clock, during which Carter and Burrus notched double-digit runs, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. Three-straight false start penalties made sure the Redskins stayed out of the end zone.

Greenville got the ball on its own end with just under four minutes left in the game. Two big runs from running back Dennis McDuffie, one for 17 yards and the other for 25, placed the Titans in the Washington red zone for the first time all game. With 2:40 left on the clock and Greenville on the six yard line, the game would come down to the next four plays.

And the Redskins defense came through, holding the opponent to just three plays for negative yardage. After a quick three-and-out from the Washington offense, the Titans tried to get off a play with 2.5 left on the clock, but couldn’t get organized in time.

For Washington, Burrus finished with 23 yards on six carries, while also notching 38 yards and the game’s only touchdown through the air. Carter led the team in rushing yards with 25.

The Redskins will look to carry the defensive momentum into next week’s game, when the team takes on Greenville Titan Green next Saturday at Kugler Field at 10:30 a.m.
