 CITY OF WASHINGTON A CELEBRATION OF HISTORY: The month of February is Human Relations Month and the City of Washington recently recognized the members of the Human Relations Council for their work in fostering beliefs, ideals and values that give purpose to life and assist people in living together harmoniously, while at the same the time providing a forum in which differences can be discussed freely, according to a proclamation signed by Mayor Mac Hodges. Hodges also signed proclamations for “Edward Peed Day,” recognizing the volunteer Washington firefighter who is the first known North Carolina firefighter to die in the line of duty, acknowledging Brotherhood and Sisterhood week, as well as the month of February as Black History Month. Black History Month was first observed 89 years ago, as part of the cultural preservation of African-American history.
