Mr. Arnold was born on Oct. 17, 1934, in Grimesland, to the late Jody and Letha Mae Arnold. A native of Beaufort County, he lived his entire life in the Beaufort and Pitt County areas. He was a 1953 graduate of Washington High School. On Oct. 2, 1953, James married Betty Lou Mills. She went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2011. From their loving union, they were blessed with three children: a daughter, Kathryn Wetherington and her husband, Robert, of Grimesland; a son, James S. “Sandy” Arnold, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Bath; and a son, Michael Arnold and his wife, Tracy, of Grimesland.

He is also survived by: grandsons, Glenn Wetherington and wife, Gennia, of Washington; Jeremy Wetherington and wife, Jennifer, of Grimesland; Christopher Arnold and wife, Ashley, of Washington; Trent Linton of Bath; Jordan Arnold and wife; Jordan Lee, of Washington; and Andrew Patrick, of Greenville; granddaughters, Alexis Arnold of Grimesland, and fiancé, Daniel Cerny of Washington,

Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie Paul Arnold and Donald Arnold, both of Washington.

Mr. Arnold worked hard to provide for his family. At one time, he had three jobs. He worked at PCS (formerly Texasgulf), sold farm insurance, and was a tobacco farmer. He has passed the trait of working hard along to his family. Mr. Arnold loved his family and friends dearly and thoroughly enjoyed life. He had several mottos that he has passed along to his family but one that he is well known for was — “If nothing is going on, start something!” He will be missed and not forgotten and we all know he is running in heaven.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church of Washington, 901 N. Bonner St., Washington, N.C. 27889.
