WINSTON-SALEM -- Jock Moore and Josh Jakubowski fell short in their quest to win Class 3-A individual wrestling titles at Saturday's state championships, held at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Moore began Saturday's action by losing in the championship semifinals in the heavyweight classification. He was pinned by Enka's Eric Reems in 3:50. Moore dropped to the consolation round, where he was pinned by Fred T. Foard's Brett Reed in 1:56.
Moore finished his season with a 25-5 record. He was the eastern regional champion.
Jakubowski won his second-round consolation match with Carver's Kevin Anthony. He won a technical fall in 4:20 with a 17-1 decision. In the third round, Burns' Gaston Grigg pinned Jakubowski in 1:34.
Jakubowski ended his season with a 29-8 record. He was the eastern regional No. 3 seed, winning the consolation finals last weekend.
Emmanuel falls in finals
HAVELOCK -- Emmanuel Christian's varsity boys dropped a 71-50 decision to Gramercy Christian in the finals of the N.C. Christian Athletic Conference Central Division tournament, held at Gramercy Christian School in Havelock.
Emmanuel's varsity girls saw their season end with a 71-11 loss to Fellowship Christian on Friday.
In Saturday's finals, Cameron Lawrence scored eight of his 18 points in the opening quarter as Emmanuel trailed 18-12. Gramercy outscored Emmanuel 17-3 in the second quarter for a 35-15 halftime lead. Lawrence scored eight of his points in the third as the Cavaliers (12-7) tried to mount a comeback.
Lawrence finished with 18 points to lead the Cavaliers. He connected on three 3-pointers. Jonathan Chandler added 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers, while Taurean Tyre had 11 points. Lawrence and Chandler were both named to the all-tournament team.
Friday, Emmanuel's boys qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in school history with a 44-27 victory over Fellowship Christian. Lawrence scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers pulled away after leading 27-22 at the end of three quarters.
Joey Rieg added 12 points and 12 rebounds, scoring five in the second quarter as the Cavaliers took a 21-17 halftime lead. Joshua Chandler had a career-high 10 points for Emmanuel.
In the girls' contest, Jennifer Perez had five points for Emmanuel, which finished the season 2-12.
Emmanuel's boys willface Riverside Christian Academy out of Lumberton in Thursday's first round of the N.C. Christian Athletic Conference eastern regionals. The game will be held at Gramercy Christian. It is a double-elimination tournament.
