Mr. Joseph Spencer Sr., 62, of 7702 U.S. Highway 17 North, Washington, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home, Washington.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, Washington, with the Rev. Rodrick Best officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington.
Mr. Spencer was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 19, 1940. He was the son of the late Annie Belle Albritton Spencer and Samuel Spencer Sr. He was a 1959 graduate of P.S. Jones High School, Washington. He did further studies at a long distance transportation school. He was employed as a professional bus driver with his last employment being with the Bear Grass Tours Co. On Aug. 29, 1959, he married Mable Mourning Spencer, who survives. He was a volunteer at Beaufort County Hospital and a member of the public school volunteer reading program. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Washington, where he served as a lay reader and on the Vestry Board.
Survivors include five daughters, Helen Marie Spencer-Lighty of Phoenix, Ariz., Gwendolyn Spencer and Deirdre Spencer, both of Raleigh, and Shenita Spencer and Alexus Spencer, both of the home; two sons, Joseph Spencer Jr. of Denver, N.C., and Darius Mourning of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five brothers, James Spencer of Edward, Johnnie Frank Spencer of Jacksonville, Samuel Spencer Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., William Earl Spencer of Newport News, Va., and Robert Earl Spencer of New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Emma Payne, Beatrice Isles, Helen Marie Spencer and Ann Lorena Small.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Washington and other times at the home.
