John R. Coltrain III

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – AWC John Robert Coltrain III, U.S. Navy retired, 58, passed away suddenly Feb. 20, 2003, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Robert was a kind and smart man, respected and admired by all who knew and loved him.
A native of Williamston, N.C., Robert was born in 1944 and grew up in Jamesville. He retired in 1987 as a chief petty officer with the United States Navy after 21 years of service. His decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal; the Navy "E," 2nd Award; the Good Conduct Award, 5th Award; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Expert Rifleman Ribbon and Expert Pistol Shot Ribbon. He was an alternate member of the Navy Shooting Team for the 1976 Olympics. He was employed with Raytheon Corporation.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Maxine Park Coltrain, and his father, John R. Coltrain Jr. of Jamesville, N.C. He is also survived by his two daughters, Elaine Linstruth and her husband Chris of Lancaster, California and Karen Ann Coltrain of Virginia Beach; a son, Michael A. Coltrain of Virginia Beach; a brother, Richard A. Coltrain of Jamesville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth N. Linstruth and Anna C. Linstruth.
He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Coltrain.
Memorial services with military honors were held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, Virginia Beach.
Funeral services were conducted in Jamesville, N.C. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, and he was laid to rest in Jamesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the National Rifle Association, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax VA, 22030; (800) 672-4521.
