DURHAM -- Despite losing last week to North Pitt in a non-conference game, Williamston grabbed the top spot in the latest Baseball America/North Carolina High School Baseball Coaches Class 1-A poll.
Williamston was blanked by North Pitt, 2-0, last week in its season opener. Since that loss, the Tigers have beaten Edenton and Roanoke Rapids. Williamston is scheduled to play at Washington today.
The Tigers are the defending Class 1-A Eastern Regional champions. Last season Williamston lost its first game then won every remaining game to reach the state finals. There, Williamston dropped a best-of-three series to eventual state champion South Stokes.
Plymouth's 4-0 start has the Vikings currently fifth in the latest poll, which is taken from votes by media representatives and coaches from all over the state. Jason O. Boyd of the Washington Daily News is a voter in the weekly poll.
Defending state champion Fuquay-Varina is No. 1 in the 4-A poll while J.H. Rose, who Washington will play on Friday, is No. 2. Ragsdale is the top team among 3-A schools while West Henderson is first among Class 2-A schools.
