Mr. Charles Edward Powell, age 77 a resident of 551 Tooley St., Belhaven, died at his home, Wednesday, March 26, 2003.
A funeral will be held in the First Christian Church of Belhaven on Friday, March 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Mike Isbell. Burial will be in the Belhaven Community Cemetery.
The family will gather with friends at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven on Thursday evening March 27 from 7 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorials be made to the First Christian church of Belhaven, 331 East Main St., Belhaven, NC 27810 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. Powell was born in Portsmouth, Va. on Sept. 1, 1925, the son of the late Mark E. Powell and Dorothy and Tuthill Powell.
He was a graduate of the Belhaven High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was later employed as manager of the Bakers Seafood Co. in Belhaven. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a former member of the Belhaven Lions Club and the Belhaven American Legion Post.
He was married to the former Mary Rose of Belhaven on May 16, 1947 who survives. Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Judy Powell Thomas and husband C.J. of Youngsville, Mary Powell Hawkings and husband Wayne of Greenville, Dorothy Powell Wester and husband Len of Louisburg; a son, Charles "Chuck" E. Powell, Jr. and wife Ginger of Greenville; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
