Mr. James Frederick Porter Sr., 76, of Plymouth passed away Friday, March, 28 2003 at UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Plymouth, with Pastor Jeff Earwood officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Jim was born in Casper, Wyom., December 28, 1926, the son of the late James and Annie Porter. He was married Oct. 11, 1953 to Ruby Harris Porter, who survives.
0002000004F9000001DD4F3,He was an Army veteran, having served in World War II, and graduated with honors from Wake Forest University in 1951. Employed by Weyerhauser Corp. for 32 years, he retired as manager of office and plant services for Plymouth and New Bern. After retirement he worked for the Washington County Tax Dept. as Tax Assessor for 10 years.
A very active and devoted member of the First Christian Church, he was a member of the Plymouth Lions Club, American Legion and the Plymouth Jaycees where he received the Distinguished Service Award. Involved in local Boy Scout activities, he helped to charter BSA Troop 383.
Survivors include son, James F. Porter, Jr. of Plymouth, wife Melinda and their children Jim and Tom; son Barry S. Porter of Prince George Va., wife Latricia and their children Devin, Cayman and Erica; daughter Jane Porter Edmondson of Plymouth, husband Hank and their daughter, Brinson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Horner-Walker Funeral Home, Plymouth, and at other times at the home.
The family appreciates the love and concern of friends and suggests that memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church or the American Red Cross.
