Mrs. Mildred Gray Carey, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 at the Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Scranton with the Rev. James Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at the Spencer Davis Family Cemetery in Scranton.
Mrs. Carey was born June 5, 1916 in Hyde County. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Preston Gray Sr. and Fannie Spencer Gray. She attended and graduated from the Hyde County Training School. She did further studies at Elizabeth City State Teachers College and at the Training Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. Mrs. Carey was an active participant of programs, activities and projects with the Mattamuskeet Senior Citizens Center Services in Swan Quarter. She was a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
She was married to Otis Carey who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Gray, William Gray and Joseph Gray; and one sister, Lydia Gray.
Survivors include one daughter, Fannie L. Bowie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Marion Gray of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two brothers, Samuel Preston Gray and Charles H. Gray both of Scranton; grandchildren and great-grand children.
The family will receive friends at the home of her brother Samuel Preston Gray on Sladesville Credle Road in Scranton. Viewing will be Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. only at St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
