Roger Allen Spencer, 68, of 3957 Quarter Road, Swan Quarter, died Monday, January 15, 2007 in Smithfield, N. C.
Born in Hyde County on June 13, 1938, he was the son of Margaret Mason Spencer and the late Gratz Spencer. He was a graduate of the former West Hyde School, graduated from N.C. State University in 1960 and worked with N.C. Department of Agriculture in Lumberton before returning home where he taught agriculture in the West Hyde School for one year. He was a past president of the Hyde County Jaycees, selected as one of five outstanding young men in N.C., was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, served on the advisory board of The East Carolina Bank, served as a DeKalb Seed dealer for many years and was founder and president of Tiny Oak Farms, Inc. He was also instrumental in the development of the Swan Quarter Watershed Project and served as a former member of the Hyde County Board of Commissioners. He was a life long member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Funeral Services will be held at Noon on Thursday at Calvary Presbyterian Church. Rev. Ed Roy Cuthrell and Rev. Candace Worth will officiate. Burial will follow at the home.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his beloved and faithful wife, Dorothy Capps Spencer; two daughters, Melanie S. Cahoon and her husband, Ben of Nags Head and Jennifer S. Gibbs and her husband, Jeffrey Dean of Swan Quarter; a brother, J.W. Spencer of Swan Quarter; grandchildren, Josh, Melissa, Jonathan, James, Jessi &Maria; a great grandson, Dustin.
