Mrs. Esther Jarvis Warren, 68, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Warren, a native of Beaufort County, attended the Belhaven schools, and was a 1953 graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School. She attended East Carolina College, earning a BS degree in Elementary Education. In 1964, she received her Master’s Degree in Education from East Carolina University. After teaching for 18 years, she served as principal for Third Street Elementary and then Sadie Saulter Elementary, for a total of 12 years. She was the recipient of the North Carolina Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator Award in 1970, and in 1985 she was named the Wachovia Principal of the Year. After retiring from the Pitt County School System in 1989, she directed an after school tutorial program in four Federal housing projects for four years. In addition, she supervised teacher interns for East Carolina University for 11 years.
A charter member of Hooker Memorial Christian Church, Mrs. Warren served on many committees for the service of her Lord and Savior, including the Christian Women Fellowship and the choir. She was a Sunday school teacher and organizer of the Senior Lunch Bunch. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as her church family.
A lover of all sports, she especially enjoyed playing tennis and golf. As a tennis enthusiast, she played on the winning 1991 National Women’s Tennis Team.
Mrs. Warren was preceded in death by her mother and father, Rachel and Rudolph Jarvis and is survived by: her loving husband of 49 years - Dennis Warren; sister - Polly J. Champion and husband, Neal, and nephews - Gray and David Champion, all of Raleigh; the Warren family including: brothers-in-law - Dixie Warren and wife, Carrie Nell, of Locust Grove, GA, Billy Warren and wife, Edith, of Farmville, Jasper Warren and wife, Billie, of Chesapeake, VA, Tony Warren and wife, Sandra, of Williamston; sisters-in-law - Hilda Hughes of Merry Hill, NC, Patsy Bryant of Windsor, NC; special friend - Gwyn Coghill and husband, Granville Hogg, of Cape Charles, VA.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Saturday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
