ELIZABETH CITY — Lucille Dunbar “Grandma Lucy” Griffin, 94, passed away February 18, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Royal, NC, on November 10, 1912, the youngest of eight children (six of whom lived), she was the daughter of the late Hertford and Julie Dunbar and the widow of the late John Griffin, all of Scranton, NC.
She lived in Scranton, NC, until 1972, when she moved to Elizabeth City. She had three great loves in life; her family, her church, and her college. She was baptized at the age of 12 and was active in the Scranton Christian Church during her years there. After moving to Elizabeth City, she was active at the Elizabeth City Church of Christ until the founding of Towne South Church of Christ, where she maintained membership until the time of her death. She also enjoyed attending South Mills Church of Christ on Sunday evenings.
From the time she first served as a camp mother at Camp Roanoke on the campus of Roanoke Bible College in 1954, she had a love affair with Roanoke Bible College. Upon moving to Elizabeth City, she served as assistant bookstore manager. Upon retirement, she began volunteering in the cafeteria, a job she continued until her entering the hospital in late January. She considered all the students her grandchildren — hence, “Grandma Lucy.”
Surviving is her son, William A. “Bill” Griffin and his wife Trish, of Elizabeth City; her grandchildren, Mark Griffin and his wife Susan, of Palm City, FL., Carol Flowers and her husband Danny of Elizabeth City, her great-grandchildren, Colton Griffin of Palm City, FL., Kristen and Cassidy Flowers, of Elizabeth City; and special nieces and nephews, as well as her wider family of RBC alumni. She was predeceased by one great-grandson, Jake Griffin, as well as all her siblings: Lillian Dunbar Hollowell, Margaret Dunbar Bing, Allene Dunbar Credle, Kenneth Dunbar, and Keith Dunbar.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday February 21, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Blanton Center at Roanoke Bible College with Ronnie Woolard officiating. A funeral service will also be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the West Belhaven Church of Christ in Belhaven, NC. Burial will be in the Belhaven Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, on Tuesday evening February 20, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and following the services in Elizabeth City and Belhaven, and other times at the home of her son, at 715 First Street, Elizabeth City.
