David A. Major, Sr., 63, of Cedar Oaks Farm, Hartwood, Va., went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2007 from a long struggle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph E. and Nannie W. Major and his only sister, Celia “Sissy” Major-Dickerson. Mr. Major is survived by his loving wife of more than 40 years, Genevieve A. “Sissy” Major of the home and two sons, David A. “Crockett” Major, Jr. of Caroline County and his wife Teresa Major and William E. Major and his wife Bebe of Bath, N.C., and two grandsons, Matthew R. Tyler and Mark A. Major, two great-grandsons, Tristen Tyler and Hunter Major and two great-granddaughters, Juliana Tyler and Hannah Major, a brother, Joseph E. Major and his wife Dianne, his mother-in-law, Margaret A. Spencer, sister-in-law, Sylvia Spencer, a brother-in-law, Donald D. Dickinson and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Major and his wife, “Sissy” worked together as owners of David A. Major, Sr., General Contractor, in Hartwood (for over 35 years). He was a contractor, who paid attention to detail and was a stickler for custom craftsmanship.
Mr. Major was very active in the Stafford County community and did many restorations in the surrounding counties to include the Civil War Mansion, “Hartwood” located in Hartwood, Virginia. He also was instrumental with the guidance of Dr. Stewart Jones of Hartwood in the relocation and preservation of “The Little Red Barn” to its new location where it is used for various functions. These restorations are documented with photographs of his craft in the pages of the Free Lance Star.
Mr. Major was an avid hunter and had many trophies on display from past years. He was also a “Farmer,” who farmed his land and that of others in the area with his prized “John Deere” tractor. He also raised various breeds of cattle on his Cedar Oaks Farm. Mr. Major was a “great story teller” of Stafford County’s past and became friends with just about everyone who met him. He was always there to provide a helping hand to anyone in need. He was instrumental with his church, in the building of a church sanctuary for a group in Pennsylvania and enjoyed the team work of both churches. Mr. Major was an active member of Richland Baptist. David enjoyed being a deacon and greeting people to his church. He was a recognizable face whenever work needed to be done at the church or the RBC Preschool.
David was past board member of Stafford County Farm Bureau. Mr. Major was a sub-contractor for Mary Washington Hospital and was well known to the hospital staff. He always greeted you with a smile and a sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by immediate family, friends, church family and his community.
The family will receive family and friends at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va., on Sunday, March 4, 2007 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services and burial will be held at Richland Baptist Church on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 11:30 a.m., viewing will be one hour prior to the funeral service.
The Reverends James H. Bethany and Phillip L. Howard will officiate at the funeral. The pallbearers will include Willie G. Shelton, Jr., Carroll C. Taylor, John V. Johnson, Donald G. Davis, Paul T. Scott and Ronald D. Dickinson. Anyone who would like to eulogize Mr. Major, should contact Rev. James H. Bethany at Richland Baptist Church, 752-9352. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that sympathy be expressed in the form of donations to Richland Baptist Expansion Fund, 2482 Warrenton Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22406 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tallpines Avenue, Locust Grove, VA 22508, in memory of Mr. Major. The family would like to thank the Richland Baptist Church family for all of their many acts of kindness and continued prayers, the many other churches for their prayers, all the special friends that have given so much of their time, Dr. Charles L. Maurer and staff, Dr. Kenneth McDowell and the staff of Mary Washington Hospital, the Cancer Center and staff, and the Hospice Center especially Patricia Hinton for her support and kindness to “David” during this battle with cancer.
