Mr. Robert James Smaw Sr., 90, of 712 W. Fifth St., Washington, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Britthaven of Washington.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington, with the Rev. Edward Moultrie Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.
Mr. Smaw was born in Beaufort County on April 17, 1916. He was the son of the late John Gray Smaw and Emma Smallwood Smaw. He attended the Beaufort County Schools. He retired as an orderly with Beaufort County Hospital, Washington. He was a lifelong member of Beebe Memorial C.M.E. Church, Washington.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara S. Guilford of Randolph, Mass., Debra S. Minor of Washington, and Tammy Glaspie-Smith of Greensboro; one son, Robert J. Smaw Jr. of Washington; one sister, Everlee Mills of Washington; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Helen Smaw, Mary Smaw Boyd, Fannie Smaw, Violet Smaw and Clara Williams Godley and four brothers, Herbert Smaw, Johnny Smaw, Frank Smaw and Isaac Smaw.
The family will receive friends today from 1:30-7:30 p.m. at Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington, and other times at the home of his daughter, Debra S. Minor, 126 Baker Drive, River Road Estates, Washington.
