Mr. John A. Mayo Jr., 81, of Boone, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, in Wilkesboro.
A memorial service will be held for the family Wednesday at Boone United Methodist Church.
Mr. Mayo was born in Biltmore on May 28, 1925. He was the son of Hattie Sawyer Mayo and John Augustus Mayo. He grew up in Washington, attending public schools and graduating from Washington High School in 1943. He served as an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950 with a degree in political science. He was a member of Phi Gamma fraternity. In 1951, he married the former Delphia Joyce Corbett, who survives. He worked with the Central Intelligence Agency from 1951-1978. He was a member of Vienna Presbyterian Church, Vienna, Va., from 1956-1970, where he served as trustee, deacon and elder. At the time of his death, he was living in Boone, where he was a member of Boone United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, David C. Mayo of Boone, and John Augustus Mayo III of Wilkesboro; one brother, William Patrick Mayo of Washington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
