Mr. Fernie Caswell Laughinghouse, age 91, of 2734 Swindell Road, Pantego died Friday , March 16, 2007 at Pungo District Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Pantego Christian Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Bussell and Rev. Doug Stokes. Interment will be at the Belhaven Community Cemetery.
Mr. Laughinghouse was born December 14, 1915, to the late Rev. W. H. and Annie Tripp Laughinghouse of Pitt County. On September 21, 1947, he married Margarette Harris Swindell who survives. Mr. Laughinghouse served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a military policeman. He was a retired farmer and cattleman. He retired after 42 years of service on the board of supervisors of the Beaufort Soil &Water Conservation. He was a member of the Pantego Christian Church, past president of the Pantego Ruritan Club, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club. He was also past president of the N.C. Soybean Producers Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Soybean Association, honorary lifetime member of the American Soybean Association and past president of the Carolinas-Virginia Grain and Feed Association. He was the recipient of the Governor’s Award from the North Carolina Agribusiness Council.
Survivors include his wife, Margarette Swindell Laughinghouse of the home; one son: Durwood S. Laughinghouse and his wife, Connie of Raleigh; one daughter: Dianne L. Bowen and her husband, Neil of Pantego; three granddaughters: Emily L. Brazik and her husband, David of Castle Hayne, Laura L. Garland and her husband, Brandon of Raleigh and Kathryn Margarette Bowen of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by sixteen brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Britt Laughinghouse, Norman E. Ward, Jim Wilder, Jim King, Johnny Swain and Stephen Fletcher, III.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday March 17, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven.
