Marissa Fucito cranked a two-run double to finally get the key hit Washington needed, while Charity Watson pitched another gem in the Pam Pack’s 3-0 win over New Bern.
Watson tossed a one-hitter, coming on the heels of her no-hitter against J.H. Rose one game earlier, in Tuesday’s Coastal Conference game under intermittent sprinkles to keep Washington (6-0, 3-0) undefeated. For Washington, ranked 8th in the latest N.C. Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Class 3-A poll, the victory over New Bern (4-3, 1-2) gave the Pack two straight against 4-A schools.
Watson (6-0) kept the New Bern hitters off balance. Alex Warren’s two-out single in the first was the lone hit Watson would allow. The sophomore fanned 15 batters, walked two and hit one batter.
Watson had plenty of offensive support as the team banged out 10 hits.
Washington ripped five hits over the first three innings, but had nothing to show for it. The Pack finally broke through against New Bern freshman pitcher Kelsey Sanfilippo in the fifth. Lauren Allen led off with a single up the middle. After Samantha Mobley moved her over, Meredith Duke drew a walk. One out later, Fucito blasted a double into left-center to score both runners.
Watson followed with a bloop single into shallow center, which allowed Fucito to race home for the 3-0 lead.
Sanfilippo gave up 10 hits. The lefty struck out six and walked two.
Watson and Amber Alligood, who doubled, both finished with two hits.
Second baseman Kayla Spain, who had a hit, was solid defensively for the Pack.
While Washington is unbeaten, Pake thinks her team can still do better.
Washington plays at Havelock on Friday.
The Pack took a 16-6 win over New Bern in the junior varsity softball game.
Sam Barber replaced injured starting pitcher Crystal Ireland on the mound and went the distance, recording the win.
Brittany Moss, Cassie Jones and Holly Davenport each went 2-for-4 for Washington.
