Dr. William Scott Thomson

GREENVILLE — Dr. William Scott Thomson, 56, Professor Emeritus at East Carolina University, passed away at his home on April 22, 2007 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 25, at 1 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by Jeff Manning, Pastor of Unity Free Will Baptist Church, where Scott was a member. Burial will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park.
He was born May 5, 1950 in Cranson, Rhode Island, the son of the late Archibald M. and Marilyn M. Thomson. Dr. Thomson received his BA degree from The University of West Florida and his MS degree from Florida State University. In 1986, he continued his education at Florida State University where he received his P.H.D. in Elementary Education. He was a member of the faculty at Elon College from 1986 to 1990. From 1990 until his retirement in 2005, he was a Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at East Carolina University. Dr. Thomson was a highly regarded teacher and researcher. His scholarly publications included numerous books, illustrations, and journal articles in the field of education. During his tenure at East Carolina University, he served in a variety of leadership roles, including Editor of The Journal of Teacher Education, Director of the ECU Scholars Program, and Area Coordinator for Elementary Education.
Dr. Thomson, affectionately known as Scott, was married to the love of his life, Susan Laney Thomson in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. He and his wife loved to travel and it was only appropriate that they marry in one of their favorite travel sites.
Scott is survived by: wife, Susan of the home; stepson, Butch Fleming of Greenville; parents-in-law, Addie and James Laney of Washington; and brother-in-laws, John David Laney and wife, Wendy and their sons, Josh and Seth of Greenville, and Donny Laney and wife Cyndee and their son Craig of Black Mountain.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
