Mrs. Beryl Theresa Smith Garrett, 84, of 10450 Lottsford Road, Mitchellville, Md., died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Prince George’s Hospital, Cheverly, Md.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Spring Green Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Elder Stanley Hicks, pastor, and Bishop Daniel Boston officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Lee cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett was born on Oct. 26, 1922 in Washington County. She was the daughter of the late Deacon George Riddick Smith and Ethel E.S. Cooper Smith. She was a member of Spring Green Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) and First Baptist Church of Campostella, Norfolk. She was a graduate of Elizabeth City State College. She was employed as a public school teacher in Nash County, Washington County and Virginia school systems. She was a member of Queen Esther Jewel Chapter #32 of OES.
Her husband of over fifty years, Linard Garrett, preceded her in death; so did her only daughter, Linarda LaVerne Garrett Tyler. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Monroe Smith and Emmett Smith.
Survivors include one granddaughter: Crystal N. Tyler, Charlotte; stepmother: Mrs. Captoria Smith, Plymouth; son-in-law: Bruce L. Tyler; five brothers: Frederick Smith, Baltimore, Md., James Smith, Mitchellville, Md.; Thornton Smith, Roper, Richmond Smith, Elder Samuel Smith both of Plymouth; three sisters: Florentine Downing, Baltimore, Md.; Ethel Dozier, Plymouth, Mary Louise Duren, Courtlandt Manor, N.Y. and a special niece, Mrs. Joyslon Smith Morgan.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Green Church of Christ.
