Hinton Leslie Clayton, 95, of 7762 N. C. Highway 45, The Ponzer Community, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, as a result of a fire in his home.
Born in Hyde County, November 30, 1911, he was the son of the late Edmond James “Doc” and Harriet Adline Howard Clayton. Long active in the community, he was a retired farmer, a member of Mount Olive Church of Christ where he served as a deacon for many years, was a charter member of the Ponzer Ruritan Club and was recently honored for more than 50 years of service, was the oldest living member of Belhaven Lodge # 509 AF &AM, was a U. S. Navy veteran having served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged following an injury sustained in service. He was married to the former Doris Midgette who preceded him in death on November 17, 2002.
Mr. Leslie enjoyed fishing, hunting, bee keeping and staying fit. He proudly lived independently at his home until his death.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Church of Christ. Keith Hamm will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Lynn Clayton, Marshall Parvin, Jr., Jimmy Clayton, Edsel Clayton, H. E. Clayton, Jr., Robbie Robinson. Other nieces and nephews will be honorary pallbearers.
Surviving are his sister, Mrs. Nina C. Robinson and her husband, Roy of Augusta, GA; two granddaughters, Lori R. Lilly of Belhaven and Anita R. Clayton of the home; six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Leslie was also preceded in death by brothers, Staton, Dewey and Howard Clayton; a sister, Hazel C. Parvin and a step-son, Webster Duane Rayburn.

The family is meeting at the home of Randy and Rita Clayton, 6942 N. C. Highway 45. They will assemble at the church for a time of visiting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the hour of the funeral.
Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter where the body will lie in state until being moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.
