Mr. Wesley Garrett “Gary” Alford, 54, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
The funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Gary was a native of Greenville and a graduate of both the Pitt County Schools and East Carolina University. He and his wife, Susan, were the owners and operators of King Sandwich for many years which was located on 14th Street in Greenville. They were also two of the original owners of Memories Beach and Shag Club in Atlantic Beach. Following his restaurant service, Gary worked for several mortgage brokerage companies prior to forming Innovative Mortgage Solutions, Inc. in 2001, where he served as president. He was a previous board member of the Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Greenville-Pitt County Home Builders Association, National Association of Mortgage Brokers, and the ECU Pirate Club. In addition, he was a member of The Memorial Baptist Church.
An outgoing person by nature, Gary felt truly blessed to have the number of friends he made over the years. His family was his passion and they strengthened him in many ways. Many will remember Gary for his warm smile and for being a diehard East Carolina University fan. He embraced football season and thoroughly enjoyed tailgating with his friends. Gary and Susan spent many enjoyable weekends at Atlantic Beach. Stress almost seemed to disappear when crossing over the bridge. They enjoyed gathering with friends, boating, cooking out and going shagging. Gary was a loving son, husband, father, brother and uncle and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Arthur S. “Ott” Alford, in 1982.
He is survived by wife of 23 years, Susan R. Alford of Greenville; son, Joshua Dail and wife Kim of Greenville; mother, Bet Alford McMahan of Greenville; brothers, Randy C. Alford of Charlotte and W. Scott Alford of Greenville; six nieces and nephews; mother- and father-in-law, Letha and Kenneth Raper; brother-in-law, Ken Raper and wife Pat of Swansboro; and sister-in-law, Ann Marie Rogers of Greenville.
The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the outreach they received during Gary’s illness. Friends are encouraged to consider organ donation registration as this was Gary’s need and availability is very limited.
