Mr. Alfred Milton Cook, age 91, of 201 Mansfield Rd., Washington, N.C., died on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in Banner Elk, N.C. Alfred was born in Blackstone, Virginia, on October 22, 1915. He was married to Katherine P. Cook for 53 years before she preceded him in death in June of 1997.
Alfred was a WW II veteran who served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp performing Cold Weather Testing in Fairbanks, Alaska. Alfred was a loving, devoted and patient husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Surviving are his two children, John P. Cook with his wife Brenda Wade Cook of Banner Elk, N.C., and Barbara C. Fleming with her husband Clinton R. Fleming of Washington, N.C.; and 6 grandchildren, Christine Cook Schmidt and husband Michael of Greenville, N.C.; Laura Cook Greer and husband Terry of Carolina Beach, N.C.; Shannon Cook Warren and husband Mike of Rural Hall, N.C.; Kimberly Fleming Mayer and husband Scott of Richmond, Va.; Dusty Wade Washburn and husband Phil of Sugar Grove, N.C.; and Mian Wade Rex and husband Adam of Matthews, N.C. Alfred is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, Wyatt Schmidt, Gavin, Gabby and Gracie Greer; Madison, Allison and Anna Warren; Alexander and Patrick Mayer, Selah and Lex Washburn, and Wade and Gavin Rex.
A graveside service was held on Sunday, August 20, 2007, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Hampton, Va. In lieu of flowers, a monetary gift in Alfred’s name may be sent to Hospice of Avery County, P.O. Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657.
