A set of bones found recently off Hyde County’s Ocracoke Island has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation for analysis.
Daniels said the bones were found near some land past Oyster Creek, on the back side of the island. An elderly man who owns waterfront property there found the bones a couple of weeks ago, but only recently alerted the sheriff’s office. SBI workers were on the island Thursday to collect evidence.
Daniels said “several” bones were found, but he was unable to give an exact number. Once the bones go to the medical examiner, there’s no clear time line as to when identifying results will be available.
For now, officials are doing what they can to rule out the possibility that the bones are human.
