Mr. Edward Newton Farnell, 90, of Williamston, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007.
An interment service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at New Bern Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in First United Methodist Church, Williamston.
Mr. Farnell was born in Onslow County, the son of the late Leland Borden Farnell and Katie Bell Henderson Farnell. He served in the Army during World War II in the European theater of operations, earning the Bronze Star. He attended Campbell University, received his undergraduate degree from Atlantic Christian College and earned his master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He worked in education for more than 43 years. He served as principal of New Bern High School, Fuquay Springs School and Williamston High School. During his career he was a member of and held offices in the N.C. Education Association, the National Education Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a member of the board of trustees of Martin Community College and the Martin County Department of Social Services. He served in the Lion’s Club for more than 55 years and the Lafayette AF&AM Lodge for more than 60 years.
Survivors include one son, Leland Edward Farnell and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lt. Col. Leland Borden Farnell Jr. and one sister, Belle Hurst Sutton.
The family will receive friends Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Williamston, following the memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center or First United Methodist Church of Williamston.
