Mr. James Allen Matthews, 80, of 707 Wil’s Way, Statesville, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A service celebrating his life will be held today at 6 pm. in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Pharr officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Roseboro Cemetery in Roseboro.
Mr. Matthews was born in Rocky Mount on Oct. 2, 1926. He was the son of the late Zera Thomas Matthews and Ernie Jane Fisher Matthews. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech. He was a retired civil engineer. On Feb. 12, 1955, he married the former Geraldine Pittard, who preceded him in death in 1997.
Survivors include one son, Mark Matthews of Washington; one daughter, Leslie Doyle of Sherrills Ford and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today immediately following the service at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
