Mr. John William Gountikas, 84, of 224 Hudnell Street, Washington, died Friday, September 21, 2007 at Britthaven.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Larry Harding. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mr. Gountikas was born January 29, 1923, in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Anthony D. Gountikas and Dorothy Gray Tetterton Gurkin. On July 2, 1949, he married the former Beulah Tetterton who preceded him in death on May 20, 2004.
Mr. Gountikas served his country in the Navy during World War II in Korea. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart as a result of injuries he received. Mr. Gountikas was a member of the Kingdom Hall and attended Asbury United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a member of the D.A.V. He was a cook in a restaurant owned by his father.
Survivors include three daughters, Emily Elizabeth Gountikas, Dorothy Gountikas Challis, and Grace Cox, all of Washington; two sons, William Anthony Gountikas of Washington and Bill Waters of Olympia, Wash., and four grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a brother, James Anthony Gountikas.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home.
