HAVELOCK — Austin Thompson lofted a perfect 59-scoring strike to Jamont Jones on the first play from scrimmage, setting the tone early for Washington. Meanwhile, the Pack defense played like swarming wasps that had their nest attacked.
It led to a 34-0 blowout of Havelock on Monday night that helped Washington erase a two-game skid.
After the big hook-up between Thompson and Jones, the Pack (7-3, 4-2) offense seemed to grow stagnant. However, Washington got a big boost when Dakuan Spencer and Jones came up with interceptions on consecutive Havelock (3-7, 2-4) possessions. It was a team-best sixth of the season for Jones.
Spencer’s interception, which he returned for 24 yards to the Havelock-24, led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Travis Daniels early in the second quarter.
Jones then picked off a wobbly pass from Justin Russell (8-of-24 for 47 yards and two interceptions) at the Washington-44. The Pack capitalized again. Thompson and Jones connected for the second time, this time from 44 yards out, to give Washington a 21-0 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.
Washington made it three straight scores late in the half when C.J. Jefferson bulled over from a yard out, which was set up by a 35-yard run by Daniels.
Thompson capped the scoring late in the third quarter with an electrifying run. The Pam Pack quarterback kept the ball on an option, juked a defender at the line of scrimmage, darted to the middle of the field and then sprinted away from his pursuers for a 59-yard TD run and a 34-0 lead.
The defense, led by the likes of David Tyson (10 tackles), Steven Whitfield (10 tackles), D.J. McKinney (nine tackles) and Chase Tripp (eight tackles), notched its second shutout of the season.
Havelock’s Mike Henderson, who entered the game with 1,382 yards, was held to 68 yards on 25 carries.
Washington’s own 1,000-yard rusher — Daniels, finished with 121 yards on 15 carries. He now has 1,691 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.
Daniels could have had much more, but several of his runs were wiped out by Washington holding penalties.
Thompson finished with 61 yards rushing on seven totes, while completing 4-of-7 tosses for 127 yards and the two scores.
Jones caught three of the passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Tony Turnage picked up 39 yards on four carries in mop-up duty in the fourth quarter. Jefferson added 38 yards on nine attempts.
The Pack closes regular-season play Friday night at West Carteret.
