Mr. Charles Gorham Clark, Sr., age 82, a resident of 229 Pungo View Road, Belhaven, NC died Wednesday December 5, 2007 at Greenfield Place Nursing Center of Greenville, NC. A private burial service for family will be held at a later date.
Mr. Clark was born in Beaufort County on May 2, 1925 son of the late George W. Clark and the late Bertha Artis Clark. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from East Carolina College (now East Carolina University) and attended Ohio State University. Mr. Clark married Ann Winstead, of Belhaven on June 25, 1955, who preceded him in death on March 26, 2006. After living in Raleigh and Norfolk, he and Ann moved to Greenville in 1957, where they opened and operated Clark and Company. While living in Greenville, he served 2-yrs on the Greenville Board of Adjustments, was a member in the Greenville Jaycees and served as President of the Greenville Exchange Club. He was a Past Master of Greenville Lodge 284 AF&AM, serving in 1964 and 1974. Mr. Clark was honored with a life membership in 1984. He was elected an honorary member of Greenville Masonic Lodges, William Pitt Lodge 734 AF&AM in 1973 and Crown Point Lodge 708 AF&AM in 1982. He was a York Rite Mason and recipient of the KYCH Degree and was a past Sovereign Master of the Duke of Beaufort No. 20 Allied Masonic Degrees.
After retiring and returning to Belhaven in 1988, he was active in the Pungo River Sport Fishermen’s Association and published the association’s newsletter, The Pungo Sentinel, he attended many concerns on fisheries issues and other subjects, in letters to editors, etc.
Mr. Clark is survived by a son: Charles G. Clark, Jr.; a daughter: LeAnna Clark Drouin and four grandchildren all of Greenville; a sister Iris Clark Holt of Pensacola Florida and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents: George W. Clark and Bertha C. Clark; his wife: Ann W. Clark; two brothers: Curtis Clark and Orville R. Clark; three sisters: Eula Clark, Nina Clark Powell and Linda Clark Heekin and his step-mother Glayde Clark Linton.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday December 6, 2007 at the home of Mr. Clark’s niece, Andrea Heekin, located at 812 Hubs Rec Road, Belhaven, NC .
The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Greenville Lodge 284 AF&AM, Oxford Orphanage Committee, 1104 S. Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
