Mr. Meredith Tyler White, 93, of Askewville, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at home.
A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie.
Mr. White was born in Bertie County on Sept. 5, 1924. He was the son of the late Cleveland and Mary White. He graduated from Chowan College, Carson-Newman College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a master’s degree in social work. He worked for Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood, S.C., American Baptist Children’s Home in Lake Villa, Ill., Barium Springs Children’s Home in Statesville and lastly as executive director of Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk. He was married to Betty Rose White, who survives. Following his retirement, he did adjunct teaching at Roanoke-Chowan Community College and worked for United Insurance for 8 1/2 years. He filled the unexpired term of mayor of Askewville, and was elected mayor the next term, serving for a period of 10 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ahoskie, where he served as elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, on the foundation committee and volunteer for the food pantry.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Tyler White; one daughter, Ann Elizabeth White and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Roosevelt, Grady, Hartwell, Aubrey, Truett and Edwin White and three sisters, Sophie White Mizelle, Mary Deans Cowan and Gracie White.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie; Askewville Community Projects or University Home Hospice, Ahoskie.
