Bennie McGowan Harris, 69, of Grifton went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 after an almost two year battle with multiple myeloma. Mr. Harris was a retired Dupont employee with 32 and one half years of service. He was a member of Ormondsville Original Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and as a Deacon. He was also a great fisherman. He was born in the Pungo Community of Beaufort County on November 24, 1938 to the late Asa Warren Harris and Vilma Naomi Allen. He was also preceded in death by three brothers; Warren Allen Harris, John Jordan Harris and an infant brother. He will be greatly missed and always loved by his wife of forty-two years Sybil M. Harris, his daughter Carol Diana Harris of Grifton, his son and daughter-in-law Benjamin and Rebecca Harris of Pink Hill, grandson Christopher Howard of Pink Hill, sister Esther H. Niten of Pungo, Aunt Rachel Stotesbury of Pungo, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Harris also leaves behind loving friends and a loving church family whose support and prayers never ceased. His family is grateful for his life and the example he set for them. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Ormondsville Original Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Ribeiro, MD and the Rev. Roger Tripp officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Davis Cemetery in the Pungo Community of Beaufort County. At all other times the family will receive friends at the home at 6079 Skeeter Pond Road, Grifton. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Ormondsville Original FWB Church in c/o Jack Beamon, 706 Hardy Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580.
