Clayton, Jordan and Baker win regional titles

CAMP LEJEUNE — The Northside girls captured third and the Southside boys took fifth in Saturday’s N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1A East Regional track meet.
Pamlico won the boys team title with 118.5 points, followed by Topsail (78), Perquimans (76), Dixon (73) and Southside (55) to round out the top five. Williamston (14) tied for eighth and Northside (8) took 13th place.
Topsail earned the girls team title with 112 points, followed by Pamlico (76), Northside (68), Lejeune (41) and Williamston (41) to round out the top five. Southside tied for ninth with 26 points.
The top four finishers in each event qualified to the state meet.
GIRLS
Panther junior Ashley Clayton was crowned regional champion in the 300-meter hurdles. Clayton crossed the finish line in 49.1 seconds. She added a third-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles (17.7).
The Panthers added a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay. The foursome of Kayla Cerny, Iva Winstead, Katie Bowen Ashley Clayton was clocked in 4:28.8.
Northside’s Katie Bowen earned a pair of runner-up finishes. The sophomore placed second in the 800-meter run (2:40) and 1,600 meter run (5:57).
Alicia Brewer, a sophomore, gave Northside a third-place showing in the shot put (32-10.5).
Panther senior Molly Hardison was fourth in the 3,200 meter run (14:21). Freshman Orianna Phillips was fourth in the high jump (4-4), while teammate Iva Winstead placed fifth (4-4). Rebekah Bonney added a fifth in the shot (28-11) and Kayla Cerny a fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.8).
Northside’s 3,200-meter relay team of Hardison, Brooke Leigh, Elizabeth Harris and Callie Leigh was third (12:30).
Southside’s Mary Baker won the regional championship in the discus event, uncorking a heave of 110-11.5 feet. Baker also finished second in the shot put (34-0.5).
Also for the Seahawks, Renihia Hodges placed third (1:04.9) in the 400-meter dash and Atyana Starkie took fifth in the 800 run (2:56).
Williamston senior Jaimie Spruill took second in the 300 hurdles (50.4), fourth in the long jump (13-11) and fifth in the triple jump (31-5.25). Lashonya Bazemore placed third in the triple jump (31-11.5), while Lynn Davis was fourth in the shot (31-1.5) and discus (92-3).
The Tigers added fourth-place finishes in the 800-meter relay (1:58.7), 1,600 relay (4:41.4) and 3,200 relay (13:14).
Seahawk senior Bryon Jordan won a regional championship by placing first in the 110-meter hurdles. He finished in 15.6 seconds. Jordan added a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles (41.2 seconds).
Southside’s 800-meter relay team won the regional title. The Seahawks were clocked in 1:33.4.
Junior Dash Spruell added a second in the high jump (6-0), while the Seahawk 3,200 relay team captured second (9:03).
Southside senior Chris Godley finished third in the 400-meter dash (53.20). Brandon Cratch took fifth in the 800 run (2:18), while Tony Grice was fifth in the triple jump (39-4.5).
Northside senior Andrew Cadle captured third in the 3,200 run 11:30), while Alexander Cutler was sixth in the 1,600 run (5:19).
Williamston’s Marquise Staton was third in the 300 hurdles (44.6), while Emery Griggs placed fourth in the discus (126-4). The Tigers added a fourth in the 400 relay (44.9).
The 1A state meet will be held Saturday at N.C. A&T.
