Mrs. Irene Carawan Brown, age 94, a resident of 305 Hwy. 94, Swan Quarter, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Autumnfield of Belhaven.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Oyster Creek Road, Swan Quarter, conducted by the Rev. Juli Gicker-Anderson and Pastor Travis Boyd. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter.
Mrs. Brown’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Wayne Harris, Barry Harris, Joseph M. Pugh, Clyde Gibbs, Jr., Cory Gibbs, Keith Harris and Ken Harris, Jr.
Mrs. Brown was born in Pamlico county on August 18, 1913. She was the daughter of the late Rufus Carawan and Elizabeth Potter Carawan. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.
On July 4, 1930, she married Carney B. Brown, who preceded in her in death on May 20, 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Leona Pugh of Engelhard and Connie Gibbs and her husband, Clyde, of Pinetown; two brothers, Poe Carawan of Salisbury and Guyon Carawan of Buena Vista, Va.; six grandchildren, Wayne Harris, Barry Harris, Joseph Pugh, Clyde Gibbs, Jr., Cory Gibbs and Candace Latham; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death three grandchildren, Ken Harris, Connie A. Pugh, Gloria Gibbs; a great-granddaughter, Diana Carol Harris; two sons-in-law, William Harris and Joseph Pugh; three sisters; and 12 brothers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, and other times at the home of her daughter, Leona Pugh, 29 Mt. Pleasant Village Road, Engelhard.
