TARBORO — David Hope Craig, aged 100, died May 31, 2008, in Tarboro, N.C. He was born February 6, 1908 in Wilmington, N.C., the son of William Gaston Craig and Sarah Brown Craig. He retired in 1973 from the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad after over 40 years of service in the timekeeping and accounting departments and the board of directors of the SCL credit union. A lifelong Presbyterian, he served as deacon and elder at St. Andrews-Covenant church in Wilmington, N.C., and as elder at First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, FL. He resided in Wilmington, N.C., from his birth until 1960; in Jacksonville, FL from 1960 until 1988; in Orlando, FL from 1988 until 2006; and at the Fountains Sunrise Community in Tarboro from 2006 until his death.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 6 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Washington, N.C., The Rev. Dr. William L. Hufham officiating.
Mr. Craig is survived by his daughter, Sara Craig Hufham, granddaughter Elisabeth Hufham Bentley, grandson William L. Hufham, Jr., great-grandson David Crane, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Juanita Whitworth Craig, by his wife of 18 years, Anita Gautier Strauss Craig, and by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Fountains Sunrise Community of Tarboro for making the last years of David’s life pleasant and comfortable ones.
