Clair Matthews Spencer, 86, of 33605 U. S. Highway 264, Engelhard, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the home of her son in Swan Quarter after a lengthy illness.
Born in Pamlico County on April 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Marshall A. and Beatrix (Trixie) Miller Matthews. She was married to Jimmie W. Spencer, who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She enjoyed a career in banking that led her to become the first woman comptroller in banking in North Carolina and she retired from The East Carolina Bank as Executive Vice President and Comptroller. She loved her church where she served on the vestry of St. George’s Episcopal Church at Lake Landing and served as treasurer of the church for about 30 years. She also served as representative to the Diocesan Convention.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. George’s Episcopal Church at Lake Landing. The Rev. James Lupton will officiate. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Patrick M. Spencer and wife, Donna, of Swan Quarter, and Donald W. Spencer and wife, Kathy, of Manteo; grandchildren, Megan S. Shaw and husband, Byron, Mandy P. Spencer, Malori C. Spencer, Eden Hope Braunstein and husband, Billy; a great granddaughter, Riya Mae Braunstein.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary M. Conyers.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to St. George’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 101, Engelhard NC 27824.
