Mr. Michael “Mike” Donnell Matthews, 52, of 5402 Amberhill Drive, Greensboro, died Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Greensboro, with the Rev. William F. Wright Jr. officiating.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, Washington, with the Rev. Dr. E.R. McNair officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington.
Mr. Matthews was born in Beaufort County on March 3, 1956. He was the son of James L. and Thelma Payton Matthews. He was a 1974 graduate of Washington High School. He furthered his studies and received a bachelor’s degree in business while in the Air Force. On Sept. 7, 1976, he married Sheila Lee Matthews, who survives. After retiring from the Air Force, he was self-employed and began North Star Furniture Repair Store in Greensboro. He was past Worshipful Master of Prince Hall Military Lodge No. 26 F. &A.M. in Arizona. While in Washington, he was a member of Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church, Washington, where he served in the youth choir. While in Greensboro, he was a member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the usher board.
Survivors include two sons, Olu Matthews and Darero Matthews, both of Greensboro; three brothers, Kenneth Wayne Matthews of New York, Tyrone Matthews of Raleigh and Allen Matthews of Greensboro and two grandchildren.
In Greensboro, the body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the home in Greensboro and at the home of his parents, Thelma and James L. Matthews, 103 Fort Drive, Washington.
Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington.
